George Brett is a Hall of Famer who played his entire career with the Kansas City Royals. 

 

If you've ever been to KC in the summer, you know it can get HOT. When George Brett played there, the team had an old astroturf field that made hot days almost unbearable.

”There's a game I used to play with myself on occasion, on hot Sunday afternoon games on the artificial turf, when it was maybe 100 degrees in Kansas City but maybe 140 with the heat index on the turf. 

 

I would see all these other guys about the fifth inning, slowing down running to their position on or off the field. I'd say to myself, ‘You know what? I’m going to beat everybody.'

 

I’m going to be the first one off. I’m going to make an impression with the fans here. 

 

'Hey, look at how slow these other guys are running, but then look at me and how fast I am running and the effort that I’m putting into the game.’ 

 

It was just a game to me, and I always enjoyed games within the game. Little things like that just kept me going and competing in tough conditions.”
